Keep It Simple Resources for Seniors

Senior Living Options

Independent Living/Retirement Communities

For seniors who are generally healthy and looking for
an alternative to living in their own homes, these communities provide a social environment in which
to interact with their peers.  Amenities can include activity and exercise programs, entertainment, outings, transportation, educational/cultural programs and
dining options.

Assisted Living

Assisted Living communities provide help for seniors, usually in the privacy of their own apartments, with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, medications, walking, or more extensive care. Amenities usually include on-site activities, entertainment, dining, transportation, outings and more. Assisted Living facilities are licensed by the California Department of Social Services.

Residential Board & Care

These homes provide the services of Assisted Living, and may also offer Memory Care, in a residential home setting that usually can accommodate six residents.  Categorized as Assisted Living facilities, they
are licensed by the California Department of
Social Services.

Memory Care

Specifically for people with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia, Memory Care facilities emphasize safety and security for their residents and also provide activities that stimulate cognitive function. Staff oversees all activities of daily living, medication management, proper nutrition, and hydration. There
are Memory Care-only communities, as well as Assisted Living communities that have dedicated Memory
Care units.

Skilled Nursing Facilities

Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF) provide the most intensive level of care, both short and long-term. Much like hospitals, they have on-site medical staff members who perform a wide range of tasks, including tube-feeding and occupational and physical therapy.  SNFs are licensed by the California Department of Health.
